An abundance of fur

The German Spitz’s thick coat is easy to care for if regular and thorough care is taken to keep it clean and looking good. It is important to know that the coat is odourless and does not tangle too much.

The coat of the spitz has an abundance of fur.

It is called double coat(complex coat), consisting of long hair (top coat) and a soft woolly undercoat (down).

mâle spitz nain - poméranian - orange charbonné - 3 ans
mâle spitz nain - merle bleu et feu - 23 mois

The top coat is used to protect the down. It protects the dog from the sun and rain.

Down protects the dog from cold and heat. It falls when it is warm (spring moult).

It is very important not to damage this underlay for the well-being of your pet.

The hair should never be shorn or completely cut.

If the long hair is cut too short, it will no longer play its protective role. The down will then be exposed to the sunlight. You would be removing its natural protection, which would be dangerous for its health and skin, which would no longer be properly protected and could weaken your dog.

At around 4-5 months of age, your puppy lose its hair. He makes its first moult.

The German Spitz undergoes 2 moults by year during which hair loss is important.
